How to Start a Meditation Practice
Meditation is one of the most powerful tools for mental health available to us, and it costs nothing. Yet many people struggle to start because they believe they are doing it wrong or that they need to clear their mind completely. That is a myth. Meditation is not about having no thoughts. It is about noticing your thoughts without getting carried away by them. Start with just five minutes. Set a timer and sit comfortably. Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath. When your mind wanders, and it absolutely will, simply notice that it has wandered and gently bring your attention back to your breath. This returning is the practice. Every time you notice your mind has wandered and you bring it back, you are strengthening your attention muscle. Do not judge yourself for having thoughts. That is what minds do. Use guided meditations if sitting in silence feels intimidating. Apps like Headspace and Calm offer excellent beginner programs. Consistency matters more than duration. Five minutes every day is better than thirty minutes once a week.
