How to Stay Motivated to Exercise

Motivation is not something you either have or do not have. It is something you create through habits and strategies. The most reliable motivation comes from making exercise a non-negotiable part of your identity rather than something you do when you feel like it. When you think of yourself as a person who exercises rather than someone who is trying to exercise, the internal resistance diminishes. Prepare your workout clothes the night before and place them where you will see them first thing in the morning. Reducing friction between you and exercise makes follow-through far more likely. Set process goals rather than outcome goals. Instead of I want to lose ten pounds, commit to I will move my body for thirty minutes five days this week. Track your consistency rather than your results in the early stages. Find a workout buddy or join a class where people expect you to show up. Social accountability is a powerful motivator. Remember that motivation follows action, not the other way around.
